Things To Do
Take A Lobster Demonstration Tour
Rocky Bottom Fisheries offers one of the most memorable experiences in Portland. Captain Russ welcomed everyone aboard the Wild Duck, while sternman Jason showed us the ropes. This 90 minute, hands-on excursion will teach participants how to bait traps, hold and measure lobsters, mark females and so much more! The demonstration tour is catch-and-release and purely educational. Tickets are $50 per person and reservations in advance are highly recommended.

Snap A Photo of Maine’s Oldest Lighthouse
Nestled on the shore of Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth is the world-famous Portland Head Light. Completed and first lit on January 10, 1791, this beacon became Portland’s oldest lighthouse. Today, it has also claimed the title of the world’s most photographed lighthouse. In addition to the 80-foot tower, the grounds includes an award-winning museum inside the Keeper’s Quarters and a seasonal gift shop.

The 90-acre Fort Williams Park is equipped with picnic facilities, hiking trails and recreation areas. Also located within the park is the Cape Elizabeth Historical Preservation Society. Visitors are welcome to tour both museums within the building or make an appointment to explore the archives for historical information.
Take the Casco Bay Ferry to Peaks Island
Portland’s iconic ferry, the Casco Bay Lines, offers year-round service to six islands in Casco Bay. Round trip tickets to any of the islands are $14 and can be purchased at the terminal on the Maine State Pier. Hop aboard a vessel to Peaks Island for a day of adventure.
While walking and biking are common, golf carts are the preferred means of transportation. Mike’s Carts offers a 2-hour minimum rental for $100 with a discounted rate for extended bookings. They provide simple check-in, friendly service and an interactive digital map loaded with things to do around the island. Reservations are highly recommended, as walkup rentals are not always guaranteed.

There is plenty to do and see around Peaks Island. Centennial Beach and Sandy Beach offer beautiful views, hidden gems and room for the kids to play. Walk through Battery Steele, the most important military fortification in Casco Bay during WWII. Hunt for buried treasure like sea glass and shells along Spar Cove’s rocky shoreline. Build a rock tower at Cairn Beach for good luck. Visit the world’s only Umbrella Cover Museum: a quirky museum recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records!

The limited dining options available on the island are quite unique. Baba’s Cafe is the perfect place to kickstart the morning. This cozy coffee shop offers coffee, tea, sweet pastries and savory sandwiches. Hidden amidst the towering trees, Il Leone bakes homemade Neapolitan pizza in their 800° Italian wood oven. Enjoy gentle music, the coastal breeze and flavors that will have your tastebuds begging for more. For dessert, be sure to stop at Down Front, a combination souvenir and ice cream shop that serves Maine’s famous Gifford’s Ice Cream.

Venture to the Edge of Spring Point Ledge
Standing at the end of a 950-foot breakwater is Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse. For those brave enough to make the trek, visitors can jump from rock to rock all the way to the lighthouse. The structure was completed in 1897 as a warning signal for mariners in the Portland Harbor. Take a public tour, stop in the gift shop and pick a spot on the rocks to watch the beautiful sun set beyond the horizon.

Sip Local Brews and Send Postcards Home
Home to the most-awarded wheat beer in the world, Allagash Brewing Company is more than just a place to drink beer. The tasting room is open year-round. It offers a wide selection of draft beers and custom merchandise. Guests can also write a postcard to their loved ones and send it directly from the brewery. Stamps are included with the purchase of a postcard.

The backyard is filled with fun for the whole family. The space is equipped with rocks to climb on, playground equipment and giant yard games. The Cellars offers tours, tastings and informative classes on all things beer. Events and tours can be booked online or in person, availability may vary.
Shop Local in Old Port
Cobblestone streets and brick buildings bring the historic district of Old Port to life. Lined with clothing boutiques, local vendors and souvenir shops, visitors can spend an entire day uncovering the magic around every corner. When the sun goes down, the waterfront comes alive with many breweries, pubs and cocktail bars offering live music and entertainment.
My personal favorite, The Maine Souvenir Shop, offers a wide variety of unique souvenirs created or designed in Maine by over 100 local artists. Electric colors, quirky gifts and friendly staff welcome guests with open arms. Be sure to support local by taking home a special memento from this vibrant small business.

Catch Some Sun at Old Orchard Beach
The town of Old Orchard Beach is located in the Greater Portland region of Maine. A popular attraction and one of the most beautiful beaches in the state, Old Orchard Beach stretches seven miles along the coast. In addition to swimming and sunbathing, there are plenty of activities in the area. Old Orchard Pier offers dining, shopping and live music. Palace Playland is a beachfront amusement park packed with rides and games. Whether you’re seeking excitement, relaxation or a mix of the two, this oceanside destination is ideal for all vacation styles.

Dining
Luke’s Lobster is on a mission to provide “the world’s best-tasting, sustainably sourced seafood” and boy, do they deliver! In 2009, Luke’s started as a tiny lobster shack that has expanded into a worldwide market today. Located on the Portland Pier, diners can enjoy a fresh lobster roll, a cup of steamy clam chowder and a beautiful view of Casco Bay.
Sea Dog Brewing Company originated in Camden, Maine in 1993. Offering a combination of award-winning craft beer and creative pub fare, the brewery takes pride in providing memorable meals to its customers. I’d recommend the Blue Paw Wild Blueberry Ale made with Maine wild blueberries. Pair it with the sweet and spicy Bee Sting Honey Wings and your taste buds will be thanking you!

The King’s Head is a hidden gem where you won’t find many tourists. The pub’s mixed menu consists of seafood staples and traditional favorites. With a rotating list of over 30 drafts and a large selection of canned brews, guests will find fruity, malty and everything in between. Its laid-back atmosphere and welcoming staff make it the ideal getaway from the bustling streets of Old Port.
Il Leone operates seasonally on Peaks Island from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. Serving pizzas from their 800° Italian wood oven, the delicately baked crust and fresh, natural flavors blend together in perfect harmony. These delicious pies are prepared with only Maine organic or authentic Italian ingredients. Dining among the trees at Il Leone is more than just lunch, it’s an entire experience.

Sweet Treats
The Holy Donut is a family-owned business that sprouted from a dream in an apartment kitchen. Made from scratch daily, these delicious doughnuts are created by blending Maine potatoes, wholesome ingredients and a whole lot of love. The menu offers rotating flavors from classics like old fashioned and vanilla glazed to specialty creations like maple bacon and blueberry glazed. Enjoy a single donut, pair it with a cup of Joe or even grab a dozen to share!

Red’s Dairy Freeze is a family-owned business that dates back to 1952. Here, ice cream comes in all shapes and sizes from cones, sundaes and shakes to classic novelties like ice cream sandwiches and frozen bananas. Whether you’re local to the area or visiting from across the world, you’ll always leave Red’s feeling like a part of the family.
Lodging
While there are many unique lodging options downtown Portland, staying in the heart of the city can be expensive. I opted for a more quiet, budget-friendly stay at the Best Western Merry Manor Inn in South Portland, a 15-minute drive from Old Port. The lengthy list of complimentary amenities includes a salt water pool, hot tub with a therapeutic waterfall, full breakfast buffet, 24-hour fitness center and high speed internet. The property offers courtesy parking to all guests and is 100% smoke free. Always willing to go above and beyond, the generous staff will guarantee your stay is exceptional.
Transportation
Traveling by car is a great way to navigate the Greater Portland area and beyond. A variety of rental companies offer vehicles on site at Portland International Jetport (PWM). This option is most recommended for those planning to travel further distances outside of the city.
The Greater Portland Metro is an efficient option within the area. The Dirigo App provides maps, trip planning and easy payment options for the metro. With everything packed closely together, Old Port is also extremely walkable.

The summer season in New England is truly incomparable. Whether you’re planning a leisurely vacation or seeking adventure, Maine entertains travelers of all styles. A cohesive blend of beautiful weather, stunning scenery and an abundance of activities open newcomers’ eyes to “the way life should be.”
Love Always.
